Term 3 and 4 - Properties and changes of materials

This term, Year 5 will be:

  • Understand that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution

  • Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating

  • Give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests

  • Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes

This website has some useful information about the vocabulary we will use during this topic https://www.abpischools.org.uk/topic/solids-liquids-gases/2

Earth and Space

In term 2, year 5 are going to be learning about Earth and Space

By the end of the term, we will be able to:

  • Describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system.
  • Describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies.
  • Describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth.
  • Use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky.

As we are now in Upper Key Stage 2, we will be learning how to use the correct terminology when we are talking and writing about Earth and Space
