Malala and Nightingale Class - Year 5

Transition Booklet for Malala class (soon to be Discovery Class)

Welcome to Year 5 - Malala and Nightingale class!

This year, our classes are named after people who have inspired change:

Malala Yousafzai, an education activist, was born in Pakistan in 1997. Her father taught at a local school, which she attended until Taliban rule meant that she was banned from attending school or even leaving the house. She continued to campaign for the rights of girls to be educated and wrote a blog under a pseudonym for BBU Urdu to raise awareness of the issue. She became a critical target for the Taliban and one day, was shot, whilst on a bus with her friends. Once stable, she was transferred to Birmingham hospital to receive further treatment, however her attack created world-wide shock and action was taken to enable girls, once again, to receive an education. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, aged 17. She continues to campaign for the rights of girls to be educated around the world.

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in a well-known city in Italy. It's called Florence and that's how she got her name. After spending her childhood reading books and teaching herself the skills of nursing, Florence went to the Crimean War to nurse wounded soldiers. She even nursed soldiers during the night and became known as ‘The Lady with the Lamp’. She and her nurses saved many lives. When she came home to England after the Crimean War, she didn’t want people to know who she was so she called herself ‘Miss Smith’. Florence Nightingale is remembered for making changes to nursing and showing people that nursing was a very important job. She even met Queen Victoria and opened a nursing school called the  'Nightingale Training School for Nurses'. In 1907, Florence Nightingale was awarded the Order of the Merit by King Edward VII.
