Chance to Shine LIVE!
Session 7: Confident Cricketer

This week’s session will be on Wednesday 3 March at 2-2.45PM and is called Confident Cricketer. It will put all the skills learnt over the last 6 sessions to the test in a competitive environment. We will also have some top tips from 3 stars of the game to help pupils to improve throughout the session.

The activities can be completed indoors and to take part this week you will need:

  • A ball or a rolled up pair of socks

  • Something to strike with: a bat, a frying pan or a hardback book

  • A target: a set of stumps or a rubbish bin

  • A wall to rebound against

Session 6: Skilful Scorer

 

We hope you had a relaxing half-term break. We took a week off to recharge too but we’ll be back this Wednesday with the latest Chance to Shine LIVE!

This week’s session will be on Wednesday 24 February at 2-2.45PM and is called Skilful Scorer. It will support pupils to develop ball-striking techniques to support power and accuracy.

The activities can be completed indoors and to take part this week you will need:

  • A ball or a rolled up pair of socks

  • Something to strike with: a bat, a frying pan or a hardback book

  • 4 items to use as markers (cups, tubs, toilet rolls)

  • A target: a set of stumps or a rubbish bin

There will also be the opportunity to work with a partner but can be completed solo using a wall instead.

With England v India being shown on Channel 4, there’s never been a better time to get young people inspired by cricket! We hope that you and your pupils can join us to get active and build those cricketing skills.

This week’s session will be on Wednesday 10 February at 2-2.45PM and is called Ferocious Fielder. It will support pupils to develop overarm throwing techniques to support power and accuracy.

The activities can be completed indoors and to take part you will need:

  • 5 pieces of paper (a pen and some blu tack)

  • A wall to rebound against

  • 4 items to use as targets (cups, tubs, toilet rolls)

Can you complete these challenges?

Jumping Dice

Play with a partner, take turns to roll a dice.  Look at the number you have rolled and then complete the correct jumping exercises:

 Roll a 1 = Perform 10 star jumps

Roll a 2 = Perform 10 pencil jumps

Roll a 3 = Perform 10 hops

Roll a 4 = Perform 10 leaps around the room

Roll a 5 = Perform 10 jumps with a ½ turn

Roll a 6 = Perform 10 bounce jumps 

Happy Feet 

 Place a ball between your feet and squeeze it with your toes so that it doesn’t move. Keeping the ball between your feet, keep your knees together, move one foot forward then the other so you look like a penguin carrying an egg. Set up a little course for you to ‘waddle’ around

Balloon Blow

Set up a start and finish point, can you blow a balloon all the way to the finish point? There and back = 2 runs. How many can you do in 60 secs?

Inside Out

Lay out items of clothing on the floor making sure that some items of clothing are turned inside out. Player one is going to try and turn all the items of clothing inside out, player two is going to try and turn all the items of clothing the right way round.  Play for 2 minutes. At the end of the game the player who has the most pieces of clothing ‘their way’ is the winner!

Wacky races

Mark out a start and finish line. Think of different ways you could move from the start to finish.  Can you move on your hands and feet? Can you move backwards? What was the quickest way of moving and what was the slowest way of moving?  Can you race against a partner using the different ways of moving?

Year 2

Can you complete these challenges?

Battleships

With a partner, each player places three targets (battleships) in front of them. Players stand at same starting point. Players take turns to throw an object towards their opponent’s battleships. Each time a battleship is hit, it is removed.  Players are not allowed to stop the object from hitting a battleship. The winner is the first player to hit all of their partner’s battleships

Rolling Penalties

With a partner, set up a goal using two markers.  Player 1 starts 5 steps away from the goal. Player 2 starts in goal. Player 1 rolls the ball towards goal trying to roll the ball past player 2. Can player 2 prevent the ball going past them? Can player 1 score? Players score a point each time they score a goal. The first to score 5 points is the winner.

Top Tip - Saving: Look up, keep eyes on the ball, be on your toes. Rolling: Use an underarm roll and look at the target

This week’s session will be on Wednesday 3 February at 2-2.45PM. It will be a Brilliant Bowler session and will support pupils to improve throwing skills linked to bowling, improving accuracy.

The activities can be completed indoors and to take part you will need:

  • 9 items to use as targets, something that won't break like plastic cups or empty tubs, drink coasters

  • A ball or a rolled up pair of socks

  • A target. A set of stumps or a rubbish bin

Ideally, those taking part will have a space of around 3 metres to bowl across.

Station 4: Perform 10 burpees.

Station 5: Jog on the spot for 10 seconds.

How many times can you repeat the circuit in 2mins? 1 point for each completed circuit

Tap up Tennis

How many times can you tap up a tennis ball on a racket in 60 seconds? If the ball touches the floor, time continues but your score freezes until you start tapping again!

Throwing and catching challenge

How many times can you throw and catch a ball against a wall in 60 secs?

Count how many targets you knocked over then reset for the next turn. Each player has 3 turns. Top Tip Rolling Underarm Step forwards with one foot, releasing the using your opposite hand.

How many targets can you knock over in 3 turns? 1 point for each target knocked over.

Station 2: Perform ten roll and release.

Station 3: Perform ten lunges.

Station 4: Perform ten arches, holding each one for five seconds.

Station 5: Perform ten extended leg raises.

  • 4 items to use as targets, something that won't break like plastic cups or empty tubs

  • A ball or a rolled up pair of socks

  • A wall to rebound your ball against with safe space around it

This week’s session will also feature the opportunity to do some pairs work as well if there is another person to do so with (but this isn’t a requirement and the activities can all be completed solo).

Session 2: Cool Catcher

 

 This week’s session will be on Wednesday 20 January at 2-2.45PM. It will be a Cool Catcher session, improving pupils' throwing and catching skills and helping them to track an object in flight.

The activities can be completed indoors and to take part you will need:

  • A ball or a rolled up pair of socks

  • A wall to rebound the ball off, with enough space around (2 metres) to complete the activity safely

This week’s session will also feature the opportunity to do some pairs work as well if there is another person to do so with (but this isn’t a requirement and the activities can all be completed solo).

Put down a starting marker, place a hoop/box 2 metres away. How many times can you throw a beanbag/object into the target in 60 seconds?

Score 1 point for each object that goes inside the target.

Year 1

Can you complete these challenges?

Balloon Blow

Set up a start and finish point, can you blow a balloon all the way to the finish point? There and back = 2 runs. How many can you do in 60 secs?

Bowling

Set up 6 targets at one end of the space; lay these out in a triangle shape. Using a ball, each player takes it in turns to roll the ball towards the targets. Count how many targets you knocked over then reset for the next turn. Each player has 3 turns. Top Tip Rolling Underarm Step forwards with one foot, releasing the using your opposite hand.

How many targets can you knock over in 3 turns? 1 point for each target knocked over.

Throwing and Catching

Practice your sending and receiving skills with a partner. Remember- eyes on you partner when you send the ball, eyes on the ball when you receive the ball. Opposite foot forward when you send the ball.

How many catches, without dropping the ball, can you do in 60 secs?

Year 2

Can you complete these challenges?

Obstacle Course

How many obstacles can you run around or jump over in 60 seconds? Be creative! Place out objects; pillows, teddies around the space. Each time you jump over an object you score a point.

Year 3

Can you complete these games/challenges?

Bowling

Set up 10 targets at one end of the space; lay these out in a triangle shape. Using a ball, each player takes it in turns to roll the ball towards the targets. Count how many targets you knocked over then reset for the next turn. Each player has 5 turns. The winner is the player with the most points at the end.

Top Tip Rolling Underarm Step forwards with one foot, releasing the using your opposite hand.

Blast off

Play with a partner; sibling, parent or carer. Stand 3 – 5 steps apart. Players make 10 catches and then swap sides, players make 9 catches then swap sides, players make 8 catches and swap sides continuing this process until they reach 0. • Can you reach 0 without dropping the ball?  If competing against another pair the first pair to reach 0 are the winners.

Standing Long Jump

Place a starting marker on the floor. Stand beside the starting marker on two feet, how far can you jump landing balanced on 2 feet? Challenge a partner to see who can jump the furthest. Device your own scoring system depending on how far apart you have your markers.

If you have space, place down a marker at 8.31m, the distance Greg Rutherford jumped to win a gold medal in 2012. How many jumps does it take to jump that distance?

Year 4

Can you complete these challenges?

Golf Rolling

Place 5 targets in different places on the floor (garden or in a room). Place a starting marker down. The aim of the game is for you to roll a ball, making it rest against one of the targets in the least amount of rolls possible. The winner is the player who rests their ball against a target with the fewest rolls. Repeat with all of the different target.

The first player to complete all of the activities listed above is the winner.

Noughts and Crosses

Mark out a noughts and crosses grid, using chalk, paper or hoops. Each player needs 5 items; socks, jumper. Make sure each player has a different set of items. On the command go, players race and put one item at a time inside one of the free spaces in the noughts and crosses grid. The first player to get 3 in a row are the winners.

Think Tactically If you cannot win a game, how can you prevent your opponent from winning?

Ping Pong Ball Catch

Start out close together and then keep taking a step backwards to increase the challenge. For a single-player, they can simply throw the ball in the air and try and catch it. How many can you do in 60 secs?

With a partner- Achieve Gold 60 catches Silver 50 catches Bronze 40 catches. Individually – Achieve 50 Silver 40 Bronze 30

 

Healthy Heart

Layout 5 markers in a space around your area. These are your 5 cardio circuit activities.

 Station 1: Perform 10 star jumps.

 Station 2: Perform 10 mountain climbers.

 Station 3: Skip or jump for 10 seconds.

Station 4: Perform 10 burpees.

 Station 5: Jog on the spot for 10 seconds.

How many times can you repeat the circuit in 2mins?

Achieve Gold for 2.5/3 circuits Achieve Silver for 1.5/2 Achieve Bronze for 1 circuit

Year 6

Can you complete these challenges?

Boccia

This game can be played standing up or sitting down. Use a starting point, place a marker 10 steps away.  Each player needs 3 balls or pairs of socks. Players take turns to throw or roll their ball towards the marker. Once all players have thrown or rolled their ball, the ball that is closest to the marker is the winner.

Top Tip- Roll or Throw Underarm Step forwards with one foot, bending the knee, release the ball along the ground using your opposite hand.

Noughts and Crosses

Mark out a noughts and crosses grid, using chalk, paper or hoops. Each player needs 5 items; socks, beanbags. Make sure each player has a different set of items. Lay down 2 starting markers. On the command go, one player at a time races forward and puts one item at a time inside one of the free spaces in the noughts and crosses grid. Then tags the next player and so on. Battleships

With a partner, each player places 5 targets (battleships) in front of them. Place an additional battleship known as the ‘ultimate battleship’ in the middle. Players take turns to throw an object towards their opponent’s battleships. Each time a battleship is hit, it is removed. If players hit the ultimate battleship they can add back one of their battleships that has been hit. The winner is the first player to hit all of their partner’s battleships.

Top Tip - Throwing Underarm Step forwards with one foot, releasing the ball from low to high using your opposite hand keep your eyes on the target
