This term in science, year 5 are exploring and learning about different types of force and the effects they have on the objects they are acting on.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object
  • Identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces
  • Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.

Balanced or unbalanced forces?

Have a look at the pictures of Pusheen the Cat and his friends having fun on the see-saws below. Are the forces balanced or unbalanced? How do you know, can you explain why? Make sure to come and tell Miss Chambers or Miss Ward if you have managed to figure it out!
